Everyone wants GenAI to do the glamorous things — build the product, write the code, design the interface. In a PMO, the wins are quieter. And they compound.

Where I’ve actually seen it work

Requirements drafting

A senior stakeholder gives you 20 minutes and a wall of bullet points. Turning that into a structured BRD used to take half a day. With a well-engineered prompt and Claude or GPT-4, you have a first draft in 10 minutes that captures intent, surfaces gaps, and structures acceptance criteria. The BA still reviews and refines — but the blank page problem is gone.

Status synthesis

On a programme with 6 workstreams, the weekly status report was a 2-hour assembly job. I built a simple prompt that ingests Azure DevOps sprint summaries and outputs a 5-bullet executive summary per workstream. The PM reviews, adjusts tone, sends. What took 2 hours now takes 20 minutes.

RAID summarisation

RAID logs grow fast. By month 3 of a programme, nobody is reading 80 rows of risks and issues. A prompt that surfaces the top 5 active risks by impact×probability, flags overdue mitigations, and writes a 3-sentence narrative for the exec pack — that’s not AI replacing the PM. That’s AI doing the work the PM was too busy to do properly.

What doesn’t work

GenAI hallucinates confidence. In a PMO context, that’s dangerous — a fabricated dependency or a misread timeline can cascade. Every AI output needs a human review gate. The goal is to go from 0 to 80% faster, not to remove the human from the loop.

The bottom line

The ROI of GenAI in a PMO isn’t measured in headlines. It’s measured in hours recovered per week, quality of stakeholder communication, and the PM’s ability to focus on decisions instead of documents.
